Designing a space for work-life balance

If you’ve been around a beehive, ‘busy as a bee’ resonates. Those little things literally don’t stop, won’t stop, can’t stop. Unless they sting you of course, and then the poor guys move west. RIP, yellow friend.

Up until a few weeks ago (when Rona gave us all a timeout card), most of us were as busy as our stripey friends'. Sometimes even more so. We all seemed to be suffering from some form of a ‘busy-epidemic'.

Unfortunately, we can’t solve the bee’s problem, but we do have a few words from one of our friends, Macy Frances, a wedding Photographer, who designed a space allowing herself to find rest and balance.

Back in September 2019, Macy had an extremely necessary revelation. She realized that she had lost grasp of balance and merged her work and personal life into one. "My business grew so quickly and in the midst of it all, I lost sight of the importance of balance. It became damaging and began to actually stunt the growth I was seeking so desperately. My desk, computer, and editing setup were in the bedroom where I'd try to sleep, emphasis on try. And while I was so focused on growing my personal photography brand as well as chasing countless dreams that over time, I began to neglect to take care of myself".

My drive and determination was a beautiful thing in most moments — but, it was also something that over time, became extremely unhealthy. I came to the realization that I am a better business owner, photographer, daughter, girlfriend, sister, boss, and friend when I am operating in rest + balance.

Finding this balance looks completely different to everyone, but for Macy, it was curating an office space that not only held a physical distance between her work and personal life but also created a haven for creativity.
