Forte Deux fashion boutique storefront at night featuring custom backlit exterior signage and illuminated retail window displays.

(About Project)

Forte Deux is a fashion retail space with a strong point of view. The store feels curated, calm, and design-led — a mix of fashion, interiors, and styling details that come together in a way that feels both elevated and personal. That same balance needed to carry through to the storefront. The building already had presence, and the sign didn’t need to compete with it. Instead, the goal was to create a branded moment that felt refined and intentional from the street. This wasn’t about adding more. It was about getting the right element in the right scale, with the right finish and illumination, so the storefront felt memorable without losing its simplicity.

(Solution)

We designed and fabricated a custom backlit exterior sign for the building façade, using bold, dimensional letterforms to create a clean and highly legible brand presence. The design direction was intentionally restrained. Rather than layering multiple signage elements, the focus was placed on one clear gesture — the Forte Deux name, mounted cleanly across the storefront and illuminated with a soft halo glow. The backlighting gives the letters presence without making the storefront feel overly bright or commercial. That balance was key. The sign needed to read clearly from the street, but it also needed to suit the boutique’s overall tone: minimal, elevated, and quietly confident. Because the storefront is so pared back, every detail mattered. The spacing of the letters, the scale on the façade, and the quality of illumination all had to feel precise. The result is a sign that feels simple at first glance, but highly considered in execution.

(Result)

The storefront now reads as a clear Knix moment within the rhythm of the SoHo streetscape. From a distance, the flag sign and window graphics catch attention. Up close, the mirrored displays invite interaction and curiosity from people walking by. Inside, the reception signage and visual merchandising continue the story, carrying the brand deeper into the retail experience. Together, the signage and merchandising layers create a storefront that feels confident, energetic, and unmistakably Knix.

(Signage Insights)

Boutique retail signage often works best when it does less.

For fashion stores with a strong visual identity, the goal usually isn’t to fill the storefront with branding. It’s to create one clear, confident moment that sets the tone before a customer walks inside. That’s where dimensional storefront signage can be especially effective.

A well-designed backlit sign offers a few things at once:

  • clear brand recognition from the street

  • visibility in changing light conditions

  • a more architectural feel than standard face-lit signage

  • a clean, elevated finish that suits premium retail environments

For stores like Forte Deux, signage doesn’t need to dominate to be effective. It just needs to feel intentional.
